Lumi

(2023)

for soprano, violin, viola, cello and piano

Music by Thorkell Nordal
Text by Elina Sallinen

The composition Lumi (Snow) is based on snow fragments in Elina Sallinen’s poetry book Kehät (Poesia, 2023, eng. The Circles). The language of the fragments is drawing slow lines on the edges of the visible, and creating a picture, a feeling of snow and the landscapes of snow. The circular motion echoing in the whole poetry book can be heard also in the snow fragments and the composition made by Þorkell Nordal. Impressions of the snow in the fragments can be heard. Different playing techniques were used to imply the swirling of snow in a blizzard and the fragility of the snowy landscape. The text is presented in the music in different ways, sometimes sung, other times recited or broken into smaller units and used as sonic material.

First performance by soprano Tuuli Lindeberg and Uusinta Ensemble on May 29th 2023 in Camerata in Helsinki Music Center.
